Park Plans Spark Dog Fight
Committee Approves Development On Fiesta Island

The
city of San Diego decided to move ahead with a plan that would convert a
popular leash-free dog park into a park for people.
The
proposal before the Mission Bay Park Committee would to develop parts
Fiesta Island that are currently used by dog owners to let their pets
run free. The $130 million plan would build a road and two parking lots
in the leash-free area and develop grassy areas, a swimming beach and
picnic facilities on the island.
Opponents of the plan met with committee members Tuesday night. They
said that they don't want any changes to Fiesta Island that would take
away leash-free land from their dogs. But San Diego city planners
argued that the city needs more park space because of the growing
population.
After listening to public testimony, the Mission Bay Park Committee
approved the project by a 9-5 vote. Ultimately, the City Council and
California Coastal Commission will have the final say over the project.

Hundreds packed the meeting of the Mission Bay Park Committee Tuesday
night for the ongoing debate over the future plans of Fiesta Island.
The
dog park at Fiesta Island is one of few off-leash parks in San Diego.
The 95-acre park is located along the Mission Bay shoreline so dogs can
run free in the great wide open and play in the water when they want to.
Dog
owners are worried that if plans move forward to develop Fiesta Island,
it would wipe out the park completely.
"This piece of land has been slotted to have two parking lots and a
large road right down the middle," said dog owner Alise Shatoff.
"Under our plan we actually only drop 7% of that area so it's still
very dog intensive, very dog accommodating," argues Mike Singleton, the
Landscape Architect and Planner of Fiesta Island.
The
city says they will take into account public input on plans for Fiesta
Island. Dog owners say they don't believe it.
